Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but if someone is important to you beyond the relationship you once shared, it isn't a bad thing to give it a try. However, what I will say is that any relationship is going to be a challenge for this guy--there isn't a person out there who is straightforward and easy to fix, and he may have learned something from his relationship with you on this front.
